The second session of the Child Health Summits will take place on June 3 and focus on data specific to the oral health, mental health, injury prevention and caregiver support of children in our area. Cook Children’s Center for Community Health will lead the summit. The data presented in the Summit comes from Cook Children’s comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The assessment is conducted every three years to understand the evolving health needs of children (ages 0–17) across our eight-county service area: Collin, Denton, Grayson, Hood, Johnson, Parker, Tarrant and Wise counties.

For mental health, the most common diagnoses for children in our area will be reviewed along with resources available for caregivers.

Parental mental health and well-being have a major impact on the children they care for. Parents’ challenges can contribute to adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, which are potentially traumatic events that occur during childhood and can have lasting effects. The summit will highlight the prevalence of ACEs among children in our area and the impact those experiences may have.

The primary focus will be different types of unintentional injuries and age-specific patterns.

Lastly, the oral health section will examine how oral health is a critical part of a child’s overall health and the importance of education and awareness.

In each section, presenters will examine not only the data behind each issue but also integrate the H.E.L.P framework to explain how health, environment, learning and parenting impact children in our service area.

Presenters will also give a tour of the data dashboard to show attendees how they can access and use data from the CHNA. The dashboard provides caregiver survey responses that can be filtered by county location, age, household income and race/ethnicity.

“The dashboard serves as a transparent, accessible platform where we can openly share findings rather than restrict valuable insights. This provides a fuller picture of children's health needs without limiting who can access the data,” said Savannah Panagopoulos, MPH, CHES®,CPST, Community Health Analyst at the Center for Community Health.
