Creating an open space for frequent communication increases awareness of how children are spending their time online. If a parent is not first aware, they cannot intervene.

"Social media use may lead to worsening mental health outcomes if it includes exposure to cyberbullying, harmful content, algorithmic feeds or engagement-prolonging design," said Dr. Greenhaw.

For Younger Children

Emotional Regulation: Children can develop a stunted ability to manage their emotions if they rely too heavily on digital platforms for stimulation or distraction.

For Adolescents

Mental Health: Teens with higher baseline depressive symptoms may increase social media use over time, which can lead to negative social comparisons.

Body Image: Appearance-focused platforms like Instagram and TikTok have a significant impact on how adolescents view their bodies.

Healthy Digital Habits

Create a Family Media Plan: Establish screen-free times for the entire family and set clear boundaries.

Select High-Quality Content: Prioritize content that models social-emotional skills or tailored learning goals, such as math or reading.

Set Intentional Limits: Be deliberate about when your child receives their first personal device.

Protect Sleep: Ensure devices are put away well before bedtime to prevent interference with rest.

Related Stories:

Expert Tips for a Safe Spring Break: Car Safety

Expert Tips for a Safe Spring Break: Water Safety

Expert Tips for a Safe Spring Break: Poison Prevention

Expert Tips for a Safe Spring Break: Aim for Safety

social,depression and social media,Social bullying,social distancing,social groups,Social Interaction,Social media,social media apps,social stressors,Social Work,socialmedia,Social and/or psychological stresses,Artificial Intelligence ,children technology headaches,kids technology headaches,Technology and children,technology and headaches,Technology and kids,Technology for kids,technology tablet,spring break,Trending

When I first moved to this country, over 20 years ago, I experienced multiple awkward social encounters due to my physical displays of affection. I grew up being taught to hug and kiss every friend, family member, or visitor that came to our home as a way to greet and connect. I didn’t understand why when I went for a hug or a peck on the cheek, I made my new Anglo-American friends uncomfortable and unsure how to react.

In Latin culture, to not hug or kiss someone on the cheek as a greeting would be considered rude. Latinos, as well as many other cultures, tend to put value in physical expressions of affection. It was a process for me to adapt to building close relationships without the physical displays.

As the years pass, I rarely have physical contact with people outside my children and close friends. I value the peck on the cheek now because it reminds me of home. My experience all those years ago made me reflect on how we are all having to quickly adapt to social-distancing rules within the context of culture.

The ways Latinos and many other cultures have traditionally been able to express love, joy and compassion are no longer safe. It is especially hard for the family-oriented Latinos to be told to stay apart from relatives because they tend to be the main support system in some families.

However, being physically distant does not mean we can’t be social. With a bit of creativity, we can stay connected in different ways. We can continue to share fun, food and laughter with the help of technology. Sharing recipes, scheduling family phone, facetime or zoom calls, and using social media are ways to check on and support each other.

While hugging and kissing abuelita or having family celebrations are not possible right now, physical-distancing is the best way to show love. We must stay apart but united and protect those that we love most until the spread of COVID-19 is under control.
