Buckle up

Car seats save lives

Yes, Sharon Evans is aware that car seat recalls are in the news. But the Trauma/Injury Prevention outreach coordinator at Cook Children’s, stresses to parents that keeping children in car seats is incredibly crucial in keeping them safe. Statistics show that vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children in the United States and that more than half of the children killed in these crashes are unrestrained.

Evans is concerned because at Cook Children’s:

  • In 2013, there were three motor vehicle crash deaths (compared to 0 in 2012).
  • There has been a 10 percent increase in injuries due to unrestrained kids and a 4 percent increase in ejections.

“This is the time of the summer when a lot of families will be traveling on the road,” Evans said. “I’m very concerned about the amount of unrestrained children we are seeing. I would ask all parents to make sure their children are buckled up correctly to prevent a tragedy to their family.”
